Health Services
Registered and professionally certified nurses are employed by the Greencastle-Antrim School District to render and monitor health services within the schools. They are assisted by Licensed Practical Nurses.
Immunizations
State law requires that all children entering school provide proof of immunizations. For a complete list of the immunization requirements, please click here --> Immunization Requirements.
Physical Examinations
Mandated physical examinations are required for all original enterers, kindergarten, sixth, and eleventh graders. Primary health care providers are encouraged to do this examination including color vision test.
PIAA requires the completion of a Comprehensive Initial Pre-participation Physical Evaluation form for the student’s participation in the first sport for the school year. This Physical Evaluation must be completed by the student’s family physician. The PIAA Sports Physical is to be completed no earlier than June 1st and shall be effective for any sport during that school year.
Dental Examinations
State mandated dental exams are required of original enterers, kindergarten, third and seventh graders. Family dentists are encouraged to perform this examination.
State-Mandated Health Screenings
1. Height, weight and BMI yearly
2. VISION - Far Vision and Near Vision Acuity tests are performed on all students yearly.
3. HEARING - Hearing tests are administrated in kindergarten, ungraded classes and grades one, two, three, seven and eleven and to any students with a history of hearing problems.
4. SCOLIOSIS - scoliosis screening is provided for all 6th and 7th graders.
Parents may request rechecks of their student at any time.
Staying Healthy At School
All students, if injured or ill, should report to the office or health room. The elementary nurse’s non-emergency hours are as follows: 8:30-9:00a.m, 11:00-1:00p.m, and 2:30- 3:00p.m. If an illness or accident is serious, parents will be notified. In extreme cases and/or if parents cannot be contacted, the child will be transported for emergency care.It is imperative that all accidents and injuries be reported to the school nurse.
If you suspect or are aware of a contagious disease or condition in your child, please keep him/her at home until the child's physician allows return to school. Please inform the child's teacher or school nurse of any infectious or contagious diseases so proper care and precautions can be taken.
A good rule of thumb to use when trying to decide if your child should attend school upon questionable onset of an illness is that he/she has a normal temperature (98.6 degrees F) for 24 hours prior to coming to school.
Medication Policy
In order to comply with state law, GASD policy and to protect the safety of our children, this policy must be strictly followed. This will insure the health and wellness of all students and support Drug Free Schools.
Any medication (including inhalers, over-the-counter medication, short term medication, vitamins or herbs) that is to be taken during the school day must be delivered to school by a parent or another designated adult. A student may carry their Epi-pen or inhaler if they have a medication form signed by the doctor and parent giving permission for student self-administration. The complete medication form must be given to the school nurse.
All medication to be given by the school staff must include: 1) Medication authorization form signed by the physician and parent; 2) A pharmacy or manufacturer’s labeled container of the medication.
To help comply with this policy, medication authorization forms are available in the school office or by clicking the link at right. Ask your pharmacy to provide a medicine bottle for each different medication to be used at school. You are welcome to come to school to give your child their medication if you do not wish to have the school staff assist.
Students needing any approved over the counter medications may be given if School Care Information has been completed.
Homebound Instruction
Children who will be absent from school for a prolonged period because of accident or illness may receive this service, after proper certification by a physician.
School Accident Insurance
School accident insurance is available. Coverage includes accidents that occur at school and in traveling to and from school. It is available during the first two weeks of school.
