Winter Weather

WEATHER DAYS & CLOSURES

Important Terms:

Snow Day:  This is a full school closure with no expectations of assignments for students.  A snow day will require the district to make-up the day to maintain 180 days of instruction.  GASD identified one potential make-up days in the 2024-2025 calendar, June 4, 2025.

FID Day:  A Flexible Instruction Day (FID) provides activities and assignments to students to do at home.  Assignments are posted by 9:00 am and students can complete these assignments flexibly and turn them into their teachers upon return to school.  Information will be provided by teachers.  This day counts as one of the 180 days of instruction and has been approved by the state.  We have been approved for five (5) of these days per year.

Virtual Instruction Day:  A virtual instruction day attempts to replicate a day of learning and requires students to complete assignments in each class following a typical school day.  Teachers will be available during the scheduled class times (with some modifications) to assist students virtually.  Schedules are included below.

2-Hour Delay:  School schedules are adjusted by exactly 2-hours with each class period shortened to follow daily schedules.  Schools and district offices open 2-hours later than regularly scheduled and dismiss at normal times.  This is used when the district believes that after two hours the roads, parking lots, and walkways are safe to travel.  The two-hours provides maintenance and road crews time to clear the roads, salt walkways and prepare for safe travel.  This is an option when we believe the weather threat has passed and the time is simply needed for clean-up and a warming sun to assist!

Our priority in GASD is to maintain in-person learning.  We have the following goals:

Goals:

·       Clear plan for staff, students, and families during weather-related closures.

·       Prioritize IN-PERSON LEARNING – therefore a 2-hour delay will be considered before a full day closure.

·       Consistent message and expectations across grade levels and buildings.

Plan:

GASD will use June 4th as a snow make up day for any weather-related closure between January 6 and April 16, 2025.   Following that first snow day, the first day of each event will be a Flexible Instructional Day (F.I.D.).  All activities will be posted by 9:00 a.m. on the day of a school closure.  Teachers will be available via email or messaging throughout the school day hours for any questions or support related to the activities for the day.

  • For students in grades K-5 there will be an academic choice board for students to complete during the day.  Students should complete one activity in each of the columns.

    • Primary students (K-2) will log in to SeeSaw and Elementary students (3-5) will log in to Schoology to engage in their learning activities.

  • Students in grades 6-12 will log in to Schoology and will be provided with review and enrichment activities.

If a weather-related event spans more than one day, each consecutive school day would operate as a Weather-Related Virtual Instruction Day.  Assignments will be posted by 9:00 a.m. on the day of the closure and teachers will be available via email or messaging during the school hours.  In addition, during a Weather-Related Virtual Instruction Day, teachers will have times specified that they will be available via ZOOM to support students with any questions.  (See schedules below).

  • Students in grades K-2 will log in to SeeSaw to access their assignments.

  • Students in grades 3-12 will log in to Schoology and their daily assignments will be posted within Schoology courses.
